Abstract

704,028. Protractors. METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Sept. 24, 1952 [Sept. 24, 1951], No. 22302/51. Class 97(3) [Also in Group XXIII] A gauge for setting the height of a tooth rest of a machine for grinding milling cutters comprises a semi-circular protractor 1 mounted by means of an arcuate guide 1a in a stock 2 on the machine so that its centre of rotation about which it rotates is coincident with the axis' of a mandrel 3 on which the milling cutter 14 is mounted. A straight edge 4 is formed by the end face of the shorter limb 5 of an L-shaped member the other limb 6 of which is mounted in a linear slide 7 in such a position that an extension of the straight edge as indicated by line 9 would pass through the centre of generation of the protractor. The radial distance of the trip 8 of the straight edge from the axis is adjusted to the required diameter of the cutter with the aid of graduations 10 on the limb 6 and is locked by means of knurled nut 7a. The protractor is then adjusted angularly with the aid of graduations 11 and locked by means of a knurled nut 7b so that the angle subtended by the straight edge relative to an axis usually horizontal, which is normal to the face of the grinding wheel 12, and passes through the centre of generation of the protractor, is equal to the desired clearance angle. With the straight edge so adjusted the tooth rest 13 is brought up into contact with it, and the L-shaped member moved out of the way.
