Abstract
749,948. Linear-dimension gauges. GERMANN, W. May 14, 1954 [May 16, 1953], No. 14147/54. Class 106 (2). A caliper-type linear-dimension gauge with parallel moving jaws 1, 3 has at least a part of one jaw capable of rotating relative to the other jaw for measuring the perpendicular distance between two parallel planes while contacting points not located on the same perpendicular. In one embodiment, one jaw 1 is fixed to a scale 2, Fig. 8, with which co-operates a vernier scale 35 on a cursor 4 to which is pivoted the other jaw 3. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the jaw 3 is fixed to the cursor 4 and the jaw 1 is pivoted to the scale 2, formed with an extension 22 bearing against the jaw 1. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, a graduated tube 6 is rotatable on a rod 5 fixed to the jaw 1 and the cursor 4 carrying the jaw 3 is slidable along the tube 4 but keyed thereto by a longitudinal groove and spring key. The jaw 3 may be turned to any desired angle to the jaw 1 by turning the tube 6 on the rod 5, being located for normal gauging operations by means of a spring 17, ball 16 and hole 18, other holes being provided for other locations, if desired. In each of these embodiments the angle between the jaws may be indicated by a scale 19 and index mark 20. In the embodiment of Fig. 7 either or both jaws may be extended by resilient blades 26 capable of swinging at an angle to the main jaw and, if desired, slidably secured by screw and slot means 30.
