Abstract

898,626. Gear-grinding. PARSONS & MARINE ENGINEERING TURBINE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION. Sept. 28, 1960 [Sept. 28, 1959], No. 32887/59. Class 83 (3). A gear generating machine head comprises a rotatable spindle adapted to carry a generating wheel, such as a grinding wheel 2, having a flat or cone-shaped operative face, mounted in a spindle-holding member 1 and angularly movable therewith about a main pivot 4 axially' normal to and co-planar with the generatrix g-g of the generating wheel and also parallel to the axis of the gear to be ground, the main pivot 4 being mounted on a main slide 5 slidable on a rectilinear main guide 6 1 -6 2 adapted to be positioned perpendicularly to the gear axis so that the rectilinear path of the main pivot lies a distance " R 0 + a " from the gear axis and is parallel to and distance " a " away from the tangent to the workpiece base circle of radius R 0 "at the point of intersection of the centre line of machine and workpiece with said base circle, and means for correlating the said angular and rectilinear movements so that, from a datum position offset by an amount # 0 R 0 from said centre line, an angular movement # i of the spindle-holding member is accompanied by a rectilinear movement a . tan # i -R 0 sec # i X [(# i - sin # i ) + # 0 (1 - cos #i)] or a high order approximation thereto, of the main pivot slide 5, whereby the said generatrix is a generatrix also of a true or nearly true involute i developed from the gear base circle of radius R 0 . A grinding-wheel having a cone angle of 150 degrees-178 degrees is employed so that tip and/or root relief or helix angle corrections may be made without interference between the wheel and other parts of the gear. The gear remains stationary while a tooth flank is ground or, if the gear is helical, it is rotated slowly as the wheel is traversed. The offset R 0 # 0 of the centre-line of the mechanism from the centre of the gear results in a reduction of the range of movement of the wheel, from say a stroke-range: max-stroke ratio of 4.4 down to 1.1. The wheel 2, Fig. 2, is carried on an arm 3 swung about the pivot 4 by a follower 9 contacting a master cam 7. To obviate the production of a master cam 7 for each different gear to be produced, an adjustable linkage 11, 13, 15, Fig. 3, is used. The linkage may be replaced by a slider-crank mechanism as shown in Fig. 4. Two such mechanisms may be provided one of which is set up for the next type of gear to be produced while the other mechanism is in use.
