871,520. Gauging toothed gears. MAAG GEAR WHEEL & MACHINE CO. Ltd. Sept. 9, 1959 [Sept. 11, 1958], No. 30822/59. Class 106 (2). A gear checking instrument has two measuring jaws 14, 22 for measuring the distance of two tooth flanks in a direction substantially parallel to the line of action of the gear 2 being tested the jaws 14, 22 being of annular shape and mounted on a rotatable shaft 5, one jaw 14 being axially fixed to the shaft 5, and the other, 22, axially slidable along the shaft, at least one of the jaws having a helical portion 38, so that the gear 2 may be turned one pitch between measurements. The jaw 14 is mounted on a ring 13 fixed to the shaft 5 and is formed from a helical sheet metal piece 38 for a large portion of its circumference, a small portion being formed as shown at 14. The helical portion 38 may be adjustable to suit gears of different pitch. The other jaw 22 is mounted on an axially movable carrier 21. This carrier is adjustably attached to a spindle 24, movements of which are transmitted through a feeler 37 to an indicator 53. In operation, a motor 11 drives the shaft 5 through reduction gearing, and a measurement is made when the feelers are in the positions shown. The spindle 24 and with it the-feeler 22 are then held fast axially of the shaft by an electromagneticallyoperated clamp 26. The shaft 5 continues to rotate and the helix 38 operates to advance the gear 2 through one pitch. When the gear-has been advanced, the clamp 26 is released and a further measurement can be taken. The helix 38 can be formed from a number of individual segments or rollers. Various other measurements are also described and the jaws may be reversibly mounted on the shaft 5.
