[Class 106 (ii)] A machine for gauging the helix of helically toothed gear-wheels comprises a horizontally slidable carriage, a horizontal bar movable endwise at right angles to the movements of the carriage and positively connected to a spindle for imparting angular movements to the toothed wheel to be examined, adjustable means on the carriage for actuating the bar, a feeler supported by the carriage and adapted to bear on one side of a tooth of the wheel, and means for indicating the deflection of the feeler. The gear-wheel under test is mounted on a mandrel between a headstock c and a tailstock d and is adapted to rotate with a spindle f which is coupled to a sliding bar e by means of three flexible metal strips g, one of which is wound on the spindle in an anticlockwise direction and attached to the sliding bar by a block h, the other two being wound clockwise and attached to the bar by a tensioning device l. A weight z tends to rotate the spindle f and so urges a roller r on the bar e against an abutment q on a carriage b slidable at right angles to the bar. The abutment q is adapted to be adjustably rotated to an angle corresponding with the helix of the gear under test and therefore, as the carriage b is moved along by a screw-and-nut device 3, 2 operated by a hand wheel 6, the abutment q pushes the bar e endwise, thereby rotating the spindle f and the gear-wheel under test. A feeler w co-operating with a dial gauge x mounted on the sliding carriage, contacts the helical surface of the gear tooth and indicates any irregularities.
