Abstract

13,465. Parkinson, E. June 6. Testing toothed gearing.-Relates to a device for indicating defects relative to the thickness or shape of teeth and the distance between the centres of spur, bevel, or skew wheels when in gear. Figs. 1 and 2 show the invention as applied in testing spur gearing. One wheel 16 is carried by a bracket 15 adjustably secured to a bed-plate 1, and the other wheel 16 is carried bv a bracket 9 fixed to a saddle 4 mounted on ball bearings on the bedplate and preferably connected thereto by springs 11. By means of adjusting-screws 17, 18, the saddle can be fixed in position for ensuring proper engagement of the wheels 16. When the screws 17, 18 are liberated, the saddle is held in one direction by a screw 19 bearing on the end of a spring-controlled rod 12. If pairs of wheels are now placed on the mandrel, any differences in the centre distances of the wheels causes the saddle to slide. When the wheels 16 are rotated, any irregularity in shape or thickness of the teeth of the wheels causes the saddle 4 to slide. The amount of movement is indicated bv means of a vernier 20 on the saddle and a scale 21 on the bracket 15, or by means of a dial indicator 22. In testing bevel or skew gearing, the bracket 15 is replaced by another bracket.
