Abstract
1,187,971. Foil press marking machine. J. H. ELLIS. 24 April, 1967 [24 Jan., 1966], No. 3176/66. Heading B6J. General arrangement.-A foil press marking machine comprises die supporting means 101, Fig. 3, having mounting means (e.g. mandrel 213, Fig. 4) for releasably and rotatably carrying an article 215 having a curved surface to be marked, means for effecting translational movement of the mounting means relative to the die supporting means and means for rotating the mounting means during the translational movement, whereby the article can be moved relative to the die supporting means with its curved surface in rolling contact with a die carried on the supporting means, and foil feed apparatus adapted to feed foil between the die and the article during return movement of the mounting means. Platen assembly.-Platen 101, Fig. 3, mounted on heater block 83 may be adjusted laterally by screws 107. Block 83 may be tilted about an axis extending front to rear, Fig. 3. The platen is adjustable vertically by shaft 75 and hand wheel 77. Shaft 75, supported in plate 63 is mounted on bars 25, 27. B or 25 is attached to a member 33, Fig. 5, to permit tilting of the platen assembly for inspection and replacement of the die. Clamp 41 secures bar 27 in the operative position. Article support means.-Cross-member 153, Fig. 4, is movable relative to platen 101 on guide bars 155 and 157, Fig. 2, and carries a mandrel 213 supporting an article 215. The mandrel is rotated by pinion 193 engaging a rack 195 on bar 197. The end of the mandrel is supported during movement by ball races 261 and 263. Article ejector rod 217 pushes the marked article from the mandrel when struck by a plunger from compressed air ejector cylinder 245. Foil feed.-Pigmented foil is fed from roll 115 around guide wheels 126, 127 on to driven roller 123 and take-up roller 135. The foil is advanced stepwise during return movement of the article supporting mandrel by a pinion 141, Fig. 6, engaging rack 143 carried on frame 144 which is retained for movement parallel with the guide bars by a rod 147 attached to the frame slidable in guide 145. Frame 144 moves with member 153 during the working stroke until collar 150 on rod extension 149 engages guide 145. During this movement pinion 141 is rotated but not roller 123. On the return stroke, when head 153 engages arm 151, frame 144 is moved back to its initial position and the foil is advanced as pinion 141 is turned. The position of collar 150 determines the length of foil fed. Operation.-Head 153 carries plate 231 which bears a trip lever 233 to trip pneumatic valves 239 and 241 controlling damping. Head 153 is carried forward by the piston of air cylinder 165 and the speed of movement is controlled by oil filled damping cylinder 167 which permits a fast approach of mandrel 213 up to the die, a slower controlled speed of the mandrel during marking, a fast movement of the mandrel to the ejector station and a fast return to the initial position.
