Abstract

1,205,091. Stamping. P. F. SCHMELTZEB. 26 April, 1968 [26 April, 1967], No. 20015/68. Heading B3Q. A device for ejecting a workpiece such as a can end C from between a reciprocating stamping punch 8 and a stationary die 14 in a press mounted at an angle to the vertical comprises a bar 49 which is rigidly connected to a pneumatic cylinder 38 pivotally mounted on a stationary part of the press and curves towards the lower end of the punch, the bar carrying a cam follower 47 which, due to the fluid pressure between the cylinder 38 and a piston 35 pivotally mounted on a stationary part of the press, is held against a cam 60 on the reciprocating press head, the cam arrangement being such that the bar is spaced from the lower end of the punch during the stamping operation and is moved inwardly on retraction of the punch to eject the workpiece C. The piston and cylinder assembly is pivoted on a shaft 19 adjustably mounted on brackets 18 on the press and a releasable pawl 28 engages a notch 61 in the mounting pivot 31 of the piston 35 to limit upward movement thereof and maintain the cam follower 47 against the cam 60 when air is admitted to the cylinder 38 through port 44. The cam is adjustable longitudinally and transversely of the press head. A slide 67, adjustable transversely of a mounting plate 62 by means of a T-shaped nut 65 located in a groove 64 in the plate, carries a slide 71 to which the cam is screwed and which is adjustable longitudinally of the slide 67. The cam assembly is locked in an adjusted position by a bolt 81 which passes through a locating block (78), (Fig. 8, not shown), which adjustably mounted in an aperture (76) in the slide 71 and through the slide 67 to engage in the nut 65. The bar 49 is adjustably mounted on an extension 45 of the cylinder 38, which also carries the cam follower roller 47. The moving parts of the ejector mechanism are formed of aluminium alloy apart from a steel tip 56. In operation, after a can end C has been blanked and formed and the punch is being retracted an ejector ring 10 forming part of the punch assembly pushes out the can end and, the cam follower 47 having ridden off the cam 60, the ejector bar moves in to knock the can end from between the punch and the die.
