Abstract

The mechanism for adapting the clamping jaws of clamping rails to the workpieces to be processed in a multistage press. The rails are actuated by the press drive and the rails can be disconnected from their carrying slides. These multistage presses can be used in transfer lines. The jaws are adapted accurately to the workpiece shape when the rails are disconnected on their carrier slides while the ram is in its uppermost position at standstill. The tool area is open to inspection and work on the tools can be carried out without obstruction. The rails engage with an additional feed mechanism whose movement corresponds to the movement imposed by the press. This feed mechanism has double acting, preferably pneumatic cylinder whose piston rod is coupled to the rail. This cylinder idles when the rails are coupled to the carrier slide.
