Abstract

1,250,117. Metal working presses. WILKINS & MITCHELL Ltd. 10 April, 1970 [7 March, 1969], No. 12076/69. Heading B3Q. A power press for forming sheet metal comprises columns 11-13 extending upwardly from a bed 48 to support a crown 14; a reciprocable slide 47 mounted between the columns and carrying upper tools 40-45; a movable bolster 16 carrying lower tools 34-39, cooperating with the upper tools, and a transfer mechanism 145; a carriage 19 to receive a bolster; the bolster, transfer mechanism and the columns being arranged so that a bolster can move between columns 11 and 13 in directions parallel to the workpiece feed; means to move the carriage 19 in directions perpendicular to the feed direction; and a magazine 26, having positions 27-30 for the bolsters not in use, arranged so that each bolster is movable between its position in the magazine and the carriage 19 in directions parallel to the feed direction. The operation of the press is conventional and the workpieces are transferred by grippers 60. When a bolster is to be changed, the upper tools 40-45 are lowered on to the lower tools 34-39, hydraulic clamps 65 are released and shafts 52 of the feed drive mechanism are disengaged from rack and pinion drives 59 for rails 57. Clamps 55 are released and cylinders 54 are operated to raise rail sections 53, Fig. 5, to be level with rails 18. The bolster 16 is then engaged by a truck 22 and moved between the pillars 11 and 13 on to the carriage 19 which is moved along rails 21 to a position opposite to an empty magazine position. The bolster is moved off the carriage by the truck 22 into the empty position and the empty carriage is then moved to a position opposite the new bolster which is required. The new bolster is moved by the truck 22 on to the carriage and the carriage moved back along the rails 21 until it is in line with the press so that the truck can move the new bolster into position in the press. The cylinders 54 are operated to lower the rail sections 53, and the clamps 55 operated. The press slide 47 is then lowered, the upper tools clamped to it by the clamps 65 and the rails on the bolster are connected to the shafts 52.
