Abstract

981,556. Grinding machines. A. A. JONES & SHIPMAN Ltd., and J. HOULDSWORTH. June 21, 1962 [April 4, 1961], No. 11907/61. Heading B3D. A surface-grinding machine of the kind having relative reciprocatory motion between grinding wheel 6 and work and means for applying cross-feed to the grinding wheel comprises a grinding wheel carriage 18 slidably supported for the cross-feed strokes by two slideways 23, 25 located at opposite sides of the carriage in saddles 22, 24 which are supported on uprights 14, 15, 16 and are movable up and down in unison on the uprights for effecting approach and retraction of the carriage and grinding wheel to and from the work and relatively movable up and down for tilting the carriage relatively to the uprights for applying a fine downward feed movement. The carriage 18 is mounted for cross-feed movements transversely of the reciprocable work table 12 between upright members 14, 15 on one side and 16 on the other, the slides 23, 25 supporting the carriage for this sliding movement. These slides are vertically adjustable on the uprights by motor-driven screw-threaded shafts 26 which raise or lower the saddles 22, 24 in unison to provide the rough feed adjustment. The slide 25 is pivotally mounted on the saddle 24 to permit of fine feed by a rocking motion of the carriage about the slide 23, this being effected by independent lowering of the saddle 24 by causing gearing 33 to act on a nut 32 carried by the saddle and engaging the corresponding shaft 26. The carriage 18, which has depending brackets supporting the grinding wheel spindle 20, is of part-triangular form in plan, the longer side being provided with depending shoes 21 having part-circular recesses to engage the correspondingly-shaped slideways 23 of the saddle 22 which straddles the uprights 14 and 15 and the other side having a flat face 31 engaging the slideway 25 of the saddle 24 on the upright 16. The arrival of the carriage 18 at the correct height may be signalled by a sensitive level-indicator associated with the saddle 22.
