Abstract

1381763 Gauging WERKZEUGMASCHINENKOMBINAT "FRITZ HECKERT" KARLMARX-STADT VEB 3 July 1972 30969/72 Heading B3B [Also in Division G3] In a system for detecting and compensating wear in a working tool of a machine tool, the working face of the tool is maintained within predetermined position limits along the tool feed direction, the tool positions being detected by a sensor which includes a portion that moves by substantially the same amount as the tool is worn. As shown, the grinding head 6 on a headstock 3 of a numerically controlled vertical grinding machine is maintained at a fixed position relative to the table 12, to which a workpiece 10 is clamped. A position sensor comprises an element 8 fixed in one of the positions of grinding elements 7 on the head 6, and an element 9 fixed to support 16 on the machine upright 14. In use, the position of head 6 is first set to its lower limit, element 8 being moved, or worn, as the wear on elements 7, by contact with the workpiece 10, until the upper position limit is reached. The system thus energizes motor 1 to bring head 6 back to its lower position, and the cycle is repeated to maintain the size of the workpiece within preset tolerances. The sensor 8, 9 may be inductive, capacitive, hydraulic or pneumatic, e.g. air jets.
