A travelling milling machine for cleaning billets comprises a rocker-arm 5 pivotally mounted at one end of the machine, and at least two rows of milling cutters at the other end of the arm. The cutters are rotated, in the directions shown in Fig. 1, by a motor 4 through gearing 21, 24. The pivot 6, Figs. 1 and 2, is carried by a vertically adjustable slide 34 on a transverse slide 7. The machine is mounted on driven wheels 14, 15 running on rails 25, and further driving wheels engage toothed racks 16. A jack 13 can raise the cutters clear of the work. The depth of cut is determined by vertical adjustment of a roller 10 which rests on the work and holds it down. At the end of a traverse, the roller 10 runs on to inclined guides 17 and raises the cutters. The roller may be replaced by a pressure shoe in which cutters may be mounted. The sets of cutters may be set at an angle as in Fig. 4, and the cutters may be of file-type mounted on rubber rings to allow the machining of uneven surfaces. In a modification, the milling spindles are vertical and the cutters are disposed to cover the whole surface of a sheet to be milled. Each cutter may be driven by a separate motor. The cutters may be adjusted vertically by screws and the rocker-arm may be weighted down by ballast or fluid. The milling spindle 45, Fig. 8, may be mounted to be urged axially downwards by a spring 49, adjusted by a ring 50 operated by an hydraulic or electric motor. A fluid device 56 can be operated automatically to raise the cutter by way of a lever 52. The cutter is mounted by way of a rubber ring 51 or a ball-joint to allow it to tilt on uneven surfaces, or it may be mounted at an angle of 5 degrees to 10 degrees to the work surface. Alternatively, the spindle may be adjusted about a pivot 58, Fig. 7, by a fluid device 60 so that the cutters may be tilted to cut in each direction of traverse.
