Cutting-edges, shaping and treating. - A machine for grinding and sharpening lathe tools, drills, cutters, &c. consists of a horizontal spindle a running in plain, taper, or ball or roller bearings j, which may be adjustable. mounted in a head b and carrying at its ends grinding-wheels g. The head is secured to or integral with a bowl c having an extension c rotatable in a column d and secured in adjusted position by screws which enter a groove c<2> in the bowl c. The spindle is driven by a belt pulley e and the centre of the part c<1> is set to one side of a vertical plane containing the axis of the spindle, by an amount approximately equal to the radius of the pulley e. The pulley is driven by a belt from a countershaft or from a motor k, the vertical axis of the bowl lying in the centre of the face of the countershaft or motor pulley on its side running towards the spindle; this arrangement of the belt gear allows of turning the bowl 180‹ in either direction. The motor k is carried by a frame l hinged to the column and adjustable by a lever m and a screw o, to tighten the belt: guide pulleys for the belt may be provided within the column, and may be carried on the underside of the bowl. Water may be supplied from a pot carried above the grinding-wheels, or by a pump r, Fig. 8, carried in an extension q of the bowl c and driven by a belt s from the grinding-wheel spindle or from the countershaft. Rests.-*Tool rests are provided and may be fixed or adjustably attached to the head or to the bowl, or to any other part, of the machine, and guards or covers for the wheels may be provided and may be adjustable.
