Abstract

1,172,087. Vertical lathes; grinding. BLACK CLAWSON CO. 17 Nov., 1966, No. 51627/66. Headings B3B, B3D, B3K and B3T. A machine tool for machining large rolls comprises a vertically extending frame 34, mounted on a base 29, adapted to receive a roll 70 with its axis extending vertically, poweroperated drive means 221, 222 and 240, 242 including a chuck 220, 245, 250 which grips the roll to rotate it about its axis, a bottom centring member 150 mounted on the frame 34 which engages in a preformed and aligned centre 115 in the lower end of the roll and a top centring member 160 which engages in the preformed centre in the upper end of the roll, the top centring member being movable vertically with respect to the frame 34 to permit engagement of the top centring member with the roll and for adjustment to accommodate rolls of different lengths. Vertical guideways 122 are provided in the frames for the cutting and grinding tool slides 127, 130 and means is provided for moving the tool slides along the roll surface while the roll is being rotated. The unmachined roll is delivered to the machine tool and is positioned and supported by rollers 68 on a loading carriage 42 in a horizontal position. The loading carriage is positioned adjacent the vertical frame of the roll turning means. A bridge unit 90 is positioned on the machine base 26 opposite the vertical frame 34 and is displaceable towards and away from the vertical frame and straddle the roll 70 when located on the horizontally disposed supporting carriage 42. The bridge member is provided with sensing means 292, 294 which, when the bridge member 90 moves astride the roll, rollers at the end of the sensing means contact the roll surface, the action of which is transmitted to means which subsequently actuate fluid means 66 to move the rollers 66 and the roll 70 into a correct alignment for machining. Clamping arms 76 are then actuated by fluid pressure to clamp the roll on to the carriage 42. The roll 70 having been correctly aligned, the bridge 90 is traversed to each end of the roll to machine with tools 101, the turning centres therein and also at one end to machine flats 116 by the milling cutter 102 for engagement by the driving chuck. When the roll alignment has been effected and the centres machined, the carriage 42 is pivoted about the shaft 45 at one end by an hydraulic ram 47 which positions the roll with its axis vertical between the upper and lower centring members which are actuated to engage the roll. The carriage is then lowered to its horizontal position and the final machining effected by the cutting tools 32 and grinding tool 138 on the tool slides on the vertical guides of the frame 34. The tools are adapted for independent operation and the movement of the components of the machine are effected by fluid motors incorporating a drive through a screw-and-nut mechanism. The machine may be actuated by tape control or by an operator using a console and positioned in a movable platform 39 on the vertical frame.
