Apparatus for machining a panel-shaping workpiece 3 by means of a motor-driven tool, such as a sawblade 13, comprises a tool support 11 mounted on a slide carriage which is guided by and movable along a bridge 5 which extends over the workpiece and is rigidly connected to or slidable along a substantially vertical frame 1 supporting the workpiece, the tool support being movable relative to the slide carriage from a neutral position, in which it is lifted off the work-supporting plane and the tool does not engage the workpiece, to an operative position at a shorter distance from the work-supporting plane, the tool support being lockable in one of the positions. The frame 1 consists of horizontal crossbars 2 and is supported in an inclined position by supports 4. The bridge 5 is movable along the frame on rollers 39 and slidably supports the carriage on rollers. A bracket 15 is adjustable about a pivot on the carriage to position the saw 13 for effecting horizontal or vertical cuts, and a pair of parallel links 9 connect the bracket to the support 11 for the saw. A spring 16 urges the support about the pivots 14 for the links in a direction away from the workpiece, and a latch 19 is provided to hold the support against the spring in the operative position of the saw. The latch has an arm 20 which, when the slide carriage is moved to its lowest position, engages a roller 23 to pivot the latch and permit the spring 16 to retract the tool support 11. A further roller 26 is mounted at the upper end of the frame and engages a cam 25 on the tool support 11 when the latter is in its uppermost position to urge the tool support to its operative position wherein it is retained by the latch 19. In a further embedment, an intermediate member 235, Fig. 5, is connected by links 219 to the bracket 215 and a latch 219 releasably retains the intermediate member in an operative position against the force of a spring 216. The tool support 211 is slidable on the intermediate member and a spring 230 urges the saw into engagement with the workpiece to a depth determined by feeler rollers 227. In another embodiment, the bridge has spacing members disposed between the frame and workpiece to raise the latter from the frame at the cutting zone to permit cutting of the workpiece by the saw without damage to the frame. The members may have balls or rollers for engaging the workpiece or frame. In a further embodiment, the workpiece is lifted from the frame at the area of cutting by an element attached to the splitting wedge 17<SP>1</SP> behind the saw blade.
