Abstract

974,258. Trimming apparatus. J. K. O. CUTTERS Ltd. July 19, 1963 [July 20, 1962], No. 28081/62. Heading B5L. [Also in Division B3] A machine for trimming the edge of a lipping 2 secured to the edge of a board or other workpiece 1 comprises a cutter 5 which is adapted to be disposed above the lipping and has its depth of cut controlled by an associated shoe 21 in contact with the surface of the workpiece. The workpiece may be a door, panel or other component and the lipping may be of timber or plastic which is to be trimmed to the upper and lower surfaces of the workpiece. The upper and lower edges of the lipping are trimmed by upper and lower cutters 5 mounted on spindles journalled in the ends of casings 9 mounted for pivotal movement about pivots 10 on the machine, the other ends of the casings supporting motors 12 connected by belts 14 to the spindles The upper casing is arranged so that gravity urges the upper cutter towards the workpiece, and a spring 15 is provided to urge the lower cutter upwardly towards the workpiece. Each casing has a rotatably adjustable spindle housing secured in position by a clamp 24 and carrying a shoe 21 which is adjustable about a pivot 22 by a screw 23 to compensate for wear of the cutter and has a flat or curved surface 26 for engaging the surface of the workpiece and inclined surfaces 27 for engaging the leading ends of the workpieces and for preventing chippings and glue fouling the surfaces 26. The spindle assemblies and cutters may be adjusted axially by nuts on the pivots 10. The cutters are prevented from engaging one another in the absence of a workpiece by a stop 28 engageable by the upper cutter casing. Over travel of the cutters towards one another is prevented by adjustable screws. The Provisional Specification refers to an embodiment in which the cutters are mounted in housing guided for up and down movement in vertical guides.
