Abstract

A machine for cutting laths, strips, veneers or the like from timber lengths comprises a stationary table 2, Fig. 2, on which the timbers to be cut are laid, and a set of revolving elements 11 for feeding the timbers to a station where they are cut by a horizontal section of a bandsaw 4 along a horizontal plane. The bandsaw is entrained around pulleys 3a, 3b in a. frame 1 and has an upper run passing over the table 2 which is circular and has an inclined surface 7 adjacent the operative portion of the saw and an opening 8a through which the cut laths pass. The revolving elements consist of box-like members 11 which are open at their tops and bottoms and formed from two U- shaped parts secured together by bolts 1 1a, the distance apart of the parts being variable to accommodate different widths of timber. The members 11 are carried by arms 12 extending from a rotatable shaft 23 driven by gearing from a motor carried in the frame 1. The timbers in the members 11 are pressed against the table as the members pass over the inclined surface 7 by jaws 19 carried on one arm of bell-crank, levers 20 which are mounted on pivots 21 Fig. 1 (not shown), on the arms 12 and have followers 22 on their other arms engaging a cam 23 secured to the table 2, the cam raising the arms against springs 25 to permit an operative to place timbers in the members and the springs to press the timbers against the inclined surface 7 as the timbers are fed to the saw by the rotation of the members about the axis of the shaft 23. The saw blade is guided by rollers 5, 6 in the cutting area. In another embodiment, the timbers are pushed around a channel formed by concentric walls 104, 105, Figs. 5 and 9 (not shown), on the stationary table 102 by wooden blocks 109 carried by arms 108 adjustably carried by a disc 112 secured to a rotatable shaft 114. The timbers are oriented as they approach the saw blade by a portion 115, Fig. 8 (not shown), of the inner wall 105 which is urged outwardly about a pivot 116 by a spring 118. The timbers are also urged downwardly against the table in the cutting area by a pair of leaf springs 127, 1271, Fig. 11 (not shown), carried by hubs 126, 1261 keyed to a spindle 125 mounted in a bracket 122. A pair of arms 123, 1231 extend forwardly of the bracket and support a rod 129 supporting one end of springs 128, 1281 which have their other ends connected to the hubs. The bracket also has a pair of rearwardly extending arms 124, 1241 connected by a damper 132 to a pair of arms 130, 1301 secured to the spindle 125.
