Abstract
1,255,487. Grinding; copy milling. PRECISION GRINDING Ltd. 17 Dec., 1969 [24 Dec., 1968], No. 61322/68. Headings B3D and B3K. [Also in Division G3] An attachment for a grinding, milling or like machine comprises a base 12 for mounting on the machine work-table 10, a platform 13 vertically movable on the base 12 by first fluid pressure means 15, a slide 16 movable horizontally on the platform 13, e.g. by further fluid pressure means 17 or a hand screw (not shown) and a stylus 26 mountable on the work-table 10, movement of the stylus 26 in engagement with a template 29 borne by the slide 16 actuating a valve 28 for controlling the first fluid pressure means 15 as the slide 16 advances. The slide 16 supports a mounting 22 for a workpiece 18, the mounting being angularly adjustable-on a pivot 23 by means of a slip 25 and roller 24. On advancing the slide 16 vertical movement of the platform 13 on pillars 14 controlled automatically by the stylus 26, e.g. by means of an hydraulic-circuit, Fig. 3 (not shown), moves the workpiece 18, rotated by an electric motor unit 21, relative e.g. to a bonded diamond grinding wheel 11 to produce a required profile. The attachment may also be used in grinding profiles on flat form tools (not shown). For co-operation with vertical or substantially vertical portions (41) of the template profile, Fig. 3 (not shown), the stylus 26 is arranged to move laterally, acting through the valve 28 to brake the slide 16 to rest, whereupon the platform moves vertically until normal operation of the stylus can resume.
