A machine for polishing or grinding an elongate workpiece having a curved surface, e.g. a compressor blade, comprises a table 1 arranged to carry a former 5 and a workpiece 4 positioned substantially parallel with each other, the table being movable either longitudinally or transversely of the former and the workpiece and comprises also a vertically-slidable member 12 having two arms, one arm 13 carrying a follower 14 and the other arm 15 carrying a rotatably-driven grinding or polishing head 16 engageable with the former and the workpiece respectively, the vertically-slidable member being slidable upwardly or downwardly in accordance with the contour of the former and also being movable at right angles to the direction of movement of the table in a direction either transversely or longitudinally of the former and the workpiece. A rectangular table 1 provided with locating positions 3 at which are mounted the workpiece 4 and former 5 is supported on a V-way 7 and flat-way 10 on a base 8 mounted on a pedestel 20. The table is reciprocated longitudinally of the workpiece and former by a hydraulic cylinder 39 ; control buttons 40 provide for inching movements. A vertically-slidable channel-section member 12 carries at its upper end two arms. One arm 13 carries a part-spherical rotatable follower roller 14. The other arm 15 carries a rotatably driven grinding head 16 around which passes an end less abrasive band 27, also passing round idler wheels 28, adjustable idler wheel 29 for belt tensioning and pulley 26 driven by an electric motor mounted on the lower end of the member 12. The weight of the member 12 and parts carried thereby is partly supported by a counterbalance weight 30 on a chain connected to the lower end of the chamber 12. The member 12 can be raised by a hydraulic cylinder 43 at the end of an operation. The member 12 is mounted and guided for vertical movement in a channelsection member 17 closed by a retaining plate 35 and extending through apertures 2, 11 in the table 1 and base 8. The member 17 has a horizontal flange 18 attached to a cross-slide 19 slidable in horizontal guideways 21 on the base 8 at right angles to the V-way 7. The crossslide 19 is fed transversely of the workpiece and formed in steps by an hydraulic cylinder operating a ratchet mechanism acting as a lead screw 42 on which a hand wheel 34 may be secured. The hydraulic operating systems for the table and cross-slide are inter-related so that feeding of the cross-slide occurs at the midstroke of the table. Several machines may be operated simultaneously, one large set of hydraulic operating systems common to all the machines being provided. The table 1 has an upstanding flange 36 which carries a cover 22 including a pivoted door 23 in which is an inspection window 24. Opposite sides of the flange 36 are connected by a wall 37 to form a tray for receiving coolant directed on to the workpiece at each side of the band through feed pipes.
