Abstract

1279992 Grinding machines CARMET CO 25 June 1969 32072/69 Heading B3D A machine for grinding the edges of a flat workpiece comprises a machine frame 5, Fig. 2, mounting a vertical spindle 6, a motor-driven grinding wheel 8 mounted on the spindle 6 with its grinding face located horizontally in a trough 5<SP>1</SP>, and adjacent the edge of the trough a clamping device for clamping a workpiece so as to enable its edge to be machined by the grinding face, and means for imparting a rotating movement to the workpiece. The vertical position of the workpiece 21, Fig. 5, during its rotation is derived from a control cam rotating synchronously with the workpiece. The or each clamping device is carried by a casing 22 which is movable vertically on a guiding member 10 mounted on the machine frame. A lever 49 is pivotally connected with the casing 22 and at 48 with a linkage following the movement of the cam to move the casing vertically in response to rotation of the cam. A link 50 is pivoted on the guiding member 10 and is connected to the lever 49 at a point adjustable along the length of the lever to adjust the limits of vertical displacement of the casing, thus enabling workpieces of different sizes to be ground using the same control cam. As described, the machine includes a plurality of grinding units 9, 9<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 2, spaced about the wheel 8. A workpiece from a magazine 11, Fig. 5, on the unit 9 is fed by a piston-operated gripper to a position between a slidable spindle sleeve 23 and a working spindle 24, and is then clamped between the two spindles. The spindle 24 is driven from a motor 31, Fig. 4, via gearing 26, 27, an electromagnetic clutch 28, a spindle 29 and a friction disc 30. The spindle 29 carries the cam 25 which when rotated causes its follower linkage to move vertically and thus to pivot the lever 49, Fig. 5, thus causing the casing 22 and hence the workpiece to move vertically relative to the wheel 8. A spindle 52 is screw-threaded into a member pivoted to the lever 49, and is rotatable by a rack-and-pinion 55, 54 mounted on the casing 22 to raise or lower the latter and thus compensate for wear of the wheel 8. A piston-controlled feeler measures each workpiece after grinding and if the workpiece is oversize a piston 58 is operated to actuate the wear compensating device. To form a flat edge on the workpiece it may be moved radially of the wheel 8 by a piston-andcylinder device 35. The unit 9 may be tilted to give a bevelled edge to the workpiece.
