Abstract

1297614 Grinding lenses; cucks J & S WYLDE Ltd 19 April 1971 [16 Jan 1970] 2164/70 Headings B3B and B3D A lens-generating machine comprises a pair of power-driven rotatable holders 16, 18, one for holding a master 48 and the other for holding a lens blank 50, a follower wheel 54 for tracing the contour 52 of the master as the latter rotates, and a lens-grinding or lens-cutting wheel 72 arranged to move as the follower wheel moves so as to generate a surface on the lens blank which corresponds exactly to the surface of the master traced by the follower wheel. The work-holders 16, 18 are mounted one above the other in a casing 14 upstanding from a base 10, each work-holder consisting of a collet 12 splined to a shaft 28, 30 mounted in bearings 36, 38 carried by the front wall of the casing and bearing housings 44, 46 on the rear of the casing. Each collet has four protruding fingers 21, Fig. 4, for holding the master and lens blank, respectively. Each shaft 28, 30 carries a pulley 32, 34 around which is entrained a belt 20 driven by a pulley 22 on an electric motor 26. The follower wheel 54 is mounted on a shaft 56 for rotation about a vertical axis, the shaft being carried by a block 58 adjustable along a pair of guide rods 64 mounted on a bracket 62 by a hand wheel 70. A mounting 71 is attached to the bracket 62 and supports a vertical shaft 73 having the lens-grinding wheel 72 at its lower end and a drive pulley 75 at its upper end. The bracket 62 is movable about a vertical pivot mounting 77 by one or more hydraulic rams 79 to urge the follower wheel and grinding wheel into engagement with the master 48 and lens blank 50, respectively, as the latter are rotated by the belt drive 20. In order to traverse the follower wheel and grinding wheel, the bracket 62 is connected by a link to the cylinder 98 of an hydraulic or pneumatic ram having its piston connected to a stationary part 88 provided with collars in which slide rods 94 connected to the bracket. Bellows 100 prevent particles causing wear of the rods.
