Abstract

1,238,963. Grinding. VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTRUMENTALNY INSTITUT. 19 Nov., 1968, No. 54730/68. Heading B3D. A machine for machining a workpiece 1 along a closed curve comprises a grinding head 3 incorporating a swinging frame 4 on which are mounted a grinding wheel 2 and a profile follower 6 of a profiling attachment 5, a driving mechanism for the frame 4 connected thereto via a resilient member, guideways 17 on the frame 4 along which the profile follower 6 may travel with respect to the grinding wheel 2, and a profile form 14 arranged coaxially with the workpiece 1. As described, the frame 4 is swung under the action of a spring-loaded rod 11 mounted in the piston 10 of an hydraulic cylinder 9 so that the wheel 2 and follower 6 are urged against the workpiece 1 and form 14 respectively as these are rotated about a common axis in a fixture 18. The follower 6 is carried on a spring-mounted carriage 15 and is advanced by a screw drive 16 to compensate for wear of the grinding wheel 2.
