Abstract

1,062,236. Grinding. F. E. ROWLAND & CO. Ltd. July 20, 1965 [June 20, 1964], No. 25599/64. Heading B3D. A grinding machine comprises a base 10 having a wheel head 11 slidably mounted thereon for axial movement and including a shaft 13 adapted to carry a grinding wheel 14, a piston 17 coaxial with the shaft and movable therewith in a sleeve 19 supported by means 21 independent of the sliding wheelhead, and means for adjusting the axial position of the cylinder in the supporting means, means to limit axial movement of the supporting means, and means for entering a fluid under pressure into the cylinder at least on the side of the piston remote from the grinding wheel. The wheel head 11 consists of a casing 12 through which the shaft 13 extends, the shaft carrying the grinding wheel 14 at one end and a drive pulley 15 at the other end being supported by bearings in the casing and a sleeve 16, respectively, the sleeve being non-rotatably secured to the casing. The piston 17 is in the form of a flange on the shaft and is slidable in the sleeve 19, the outer surface of which is in screw-threaded engagement with a nut 21 comprising the supporting means. The sleeve 16 is prevented from rotation relative to the cylinder by splining 20. The nut 21 is formed with a flange 28 constituting an in-feed front stop and is rotatable to adjust the axial position of the sleeve 19 by rotation of a gear-wheel 22 which is connected by splining 23 to the nut and is supported in a housing 25 integral with the base 10. The gear-wheel is rotated by a worm 24. A second gear-wheel 29 constitutes an in-feed back stop and is in screw threaded engagement with a part of the nut 21, the gear-wheel 29 being rotated by a worm 30. A third gearwheel 34 which is rotatable by a worm 33 is splined to an annular member 32 constituting a trueing stop and in engagement with a screw thread 31 on the forward end of the sleeve 16. A pair of hydraulic cylinders 26 having rods 27 are provided for effecting forward and reverse movement of the wheel-head. In use, two units may be axially aligned and the workpieces plunged between the opposed faces of the grinding wheels. Each wheel is adjusted by movement of the sleeve 19 by the worm 24 and gear 22, the wheel-head being urged to its forward position by fluid pressure in the rod ends of the cylinders 26 and axial movement of the nut 21 is prevented by adjustment of the back stop 29 by the worm 30. Wear of the grinding wheel is compensated by adjustment of the sleeve 19 by rotation of the nut 21 effected by the worm 24. The grinding wheel can be retracted by supplying pressure oil to the closed ends of the cylinders 26. When it is desired to true the grinding wheel, the wheel-head is retracted to a position in which the trueing stop 32 engages the end of the sleeve 9 by supplying pressure oil to the forward end of the sleeve 19 to act on the piston 17. When the two units are used for in-feed grinding, the working stroke of each wheel-head is determined by adjustment of the back stop 29 by the worm 30. The cylinders 26 are operated to effect advance and return of the wheel-head, pressure oil being supplied to the rear end of the sleeve 19 behind the piston. Adjustment of the sleeve 19 by rotation of the nut 21 has no effect on the stroke of the wheelhead.
