A grinding machine of the kind having at least one grinding wheel a movable on a slide f from a working to a trimming position is provided with a stop carried in bearings m on a fixed part g of the machine located between a pair of abutments n, n<SP>1</SP> on the slide f, the stop comprising two co-axially adjustable screwed parts o, p, Fig. 3, whereby the overall length of the stop may be carried by relative angular movements of one of the parts, and means whereby the other part may impart longiudinal movement of the stop as a whole. The internally screwed element o, is rotable by a worm and wheel s, t, through its splined outer surface to vary the distance between the outer ends of the parts o, p; the part p is engaged by an internally threaded worm wheel q to effect longitudinal movement of both parts of the stop relative to the machine base g in response to the rotation of the manually operable worm r. The wheelcarrying slide f is moved to its working position, when the abutment n contacts the end p of the stop, by a piston rod h movable within a fixed hydraulic cylinder k, and is retracted to a trimming position, by a reversal of the rod h, when the abutment n<SP>1</SP> contacts the stop part o. The slide may be retracted beyond this position for wheel changing by the removal of the abutment n<SP>1</SP>, thus allowing the stop part o to enter a bore n<SP>3</SP> in the abutment support. A second wheel a<SP>1</SP> and slide f<SP>1</SP> may be similarly controlled by an adjustable stop supported in bearings m<SP>1</SP>. The invention is also applicable to a machine in which the work b is located between the peripheries of grinding and control wheels.
