Abstract
1,018,871. Steering aircraft nosewheels- DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Aug. 27, 1962 [July 29, 1961 (2)], No. 27615/61 and 27616/61. Heading B7H. A steerable aircraft nosewheel mounting comprises a main support member arranged for pivotal movement about trunnion bearings which form a transverse retraction hinge in the aircraft, a wheel carrying leg mounted in the main support member for steerable turning movement, and one or more steering motors housed in that part of the main support member which extends between the trunnion bearings. As shown, a pair of nosewheels 18 is mounted on a shaft 17 carried by a tube 16 of a shockabsorbing leg 15 pivotally but not telescopically mounted in a housing 14, the upper part of which carries trunnions 12 and 13 for retraction of the wheels. The tube 15 carries at its upper end a pinion 22 meshing with gears 25 and 26 carried by the shafts of hydraulic motors, which each may comprise a shaft 28 carrying vanes working between fixed abutments 32 in a cylindrical bore formed in the housing. The motors are actuated in parallel from a known form of servo control.
