930,764. Controlling gear for movement in either direction. BRAY CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT Ltd., and A. F. J. PINK. March 7, 1962 [March 7, 1961], No. 8375/61. Class 79(5). An arrangement for steering a vehicle, e.g., an earth moving vehicle, in either direction, comprises the incorporation in the steering mechanism of a reverse gear. As shown, the steering shaft 14 is coupled by a universal joint 40 and a splined member 27 with a bevel gear 29 which meshes with a similar bevel 30. The steering wheel 46 is carried by a stirrup 54 pivoted to the housing 22 on the upper end of the steering column and in which the bevels are mounted, the steering wheel having a splined shaft 43 which is retractable against the pressure of a spring 57 by a member 50, 51 and which may be engaged in a correspondingly splined hub 31 or 32 in the bevels 29 or 30 respectively. In each of its two positions, the steering wheel is tilted towards a seat from which the vehicle can be steered, a right hand turn of the wheel turning the vehicle to the right in the direction of motion. A gear shift lever 64 is mounted on the stirrup and is connected through universal joints 65 and 68 and rod 66 with the gear shift mechanism.
