Abstract

1,137,042. Steering mechanism; preventing theft. BRITISH MOTOR CORP. Ltd. 27 Oct., 1967 [15 Sept., 1966], No. 41262/66. Headings B7H and B7J. In steering mechanism for a motor vehicle, the steering wheel 1 is mounted at the free extremity of a cantilever beam 2 overlying the driving position transversely and constituting one limb of an angular structure 3 of which the other limb 4 is mounted centrally of the driving compartment in a manner permitting pivotal movement about an axis at or near its base and transverse of the vehicle, the angular structure 3 including means for transmitting to the region of its base rotary movements of the steering wheel 1. The angular structure 3 is of boxsection fabricated from sheet metal and is mounted in trunnions 5. The steering wheel shaft 6 carries a sprocket 7 connected by a chain 8 to a sprocket 10 which is coupled through universal joints 11, 12 and a sliding joint 13 to rack-and-pinion steering gear 14. Pivoting of the structure 3 in the trunnions 5 is controlled by frictional loading or by a spring-loaded detent permitting step-wise adjustment of the steering wheel position. Instruments, switches and gear lever may be carried by the structure 3. To prevent theft of the vehicle the steering wheel shaft 6 may be lockable, or the angular structure 3 may be lockable in a position wherein the steering wheel 1 prevents occupation of the driving seat.
