Abstract
A method and device for securing a vehicle by preventing a would-be thief from occupying the normal driving seat of the vehicle. The security device comprises means for obstructing normal occupancy of the vehicle seat by for example securing the driver's seat in a folded forward position or by extending across the space which would normally be occupied by a driver of the vehicle.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Vehicle security device
The present invention relates to a method for securing a vehicle and a security device for use in accordance with the method.
Various locking devices are known for preventing the unauthorised driving away of vehicles. For examples, steering locks are fitted to all new cars.
Unfortunately steering locks can be dismantled or broken relatively easily by experienced thieves. It is also known to lock the steering wheel to a pedal of the vehicle by means of a telescopic device supporting hooks at each end. Unfortunately such devices can be removed relatively easily by cutting out a small part of the steering wheel. Regardless of the type of locking device, it is also known that experienced thieves carry duplicate sets of keys which enable them to remove locking devices simply by trying a range of keys until one of them works.
The basic problem with the known devices is that the thief can sit in the driving seat whilst working to remove the locking device and therfore only close inspection will reveal to passers-by that he is behaving suspiciously.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved locking device.
According to the present invention, there is provided a method for securing a vehicle, wherein a security device is positioned so that a person cannot sit normally on the vehicle driving seat until the security device is released.
The invention also provides a security device which may be locked in position in a vehicle so as to prevent a person sitting normally on the vehicle driving seat.
In vehicles in which the driving seat can be folded forward towards the steering wheel the driving seat may be simply secured by a locking device in the folded forwards position. This can be achieved for example by padlocking the seat to the steering wheel or by providing a lock on the pivot about which the seat is foldable. Where the seat is padlocked to the steering wheel, the locking device can engage the head restraint provided on many vehicles or a bracket provided on the upper edge of the seat back. In vehicles in which the driving seat cannot be folded forward an elongate security device can be locked in position between the driving seat back and the steering wheel so as to pass through the position normally occupied by a person sitting on the driving seat.Alternatively an elongate security device could be locked in position so as to extend from a door pillar of the vehicle across the drivers seat or across the space provided for a drivers legs, again preventing a would-be thief sitting normally on the seat.
The security device could take a variety of forms.
For example, a U-shaped member of steel tube or strip could be provided which would be slipped over the steering wheel and then positioned so that its ends extend on either side of a head restraint or specially provided bracket on the drivers seat. The two ends could then be secured together and to the head restraint or bracket by a suitable padlock. The U-shaped member could be formed from two pivotally connected limbs or a resilient single member to facilitate its positioning on the steering wheel and the head restraint or bracket.
Alternatively, the security device could be in the form of a simple chain and padlock. The use of a simple padlock is advantageous as padlocks could be supplied of a wide variety of types so that a thief would require a very extensive set of duplicate keys to be confident of being able to release the security device and would have to spend a considerable period of time going through the set of keys before finding the correct one.
If a lock is provided in a forward folding driving seat so as to prevent the seat being returned to its normal upright position and the lock is positioned adjacent the drivers door a would-be thief could only work on the lock from outside the vehicle with the drivers door open. This would increase the chances of his actions attracting suspicion.
1. A method for securing a vehicle, wherein a security device is positioned so that a person cannot sit normally on the vehicle driving seat until the security device is released.
2. A security device for a vehicle, the security device being such that it may be locked in position in the vehicle so as to prevent a person sitting normally on the vehicle driving seat.
3. A security device according to claim 2 for use in vehicles in which the driving seat can be folded forward towards the steering wheel, wherein the security device is adapted when locked in position to lock the driving seat in the folded forward position.
4. A security device according to claim 3, comprising means for padlocking the seat to the steering wheel.
5. A security device according to claim 3, comprising a lock on the pivot about which the seat is foldable for locking the seat in the folded forward position.
6. A security device according to claim 2, comprising an elongate member which can be locked in position between the driving seat back and the steering wheel so as to pass through the position normally occupied by a person sitting on the driving seat.
7. A security device according to claim 2, comprising an elongate member which can be locked in position so as to extend from a door pillar of the vehicle across the driver's seat so as to prevent normal occupancy of the driver's seat.
8. A security device substantially as hereinbefore described.
