Abstract
684,969. Steering gear. RANSOMES & RAPTER, Ltd., and WORSNOP, T. Feb. 9, 1951. [March 27, 1950] No. 7612/50 Class 114. [Also in Group XXXI] In a vehicle steering mechanism having means for reversing the direction of steering corresponding to a given movement of the steering wheel so that whichever way the driver is facing steering will be in the orthodox direction for a given movement of the steering wheel, the steering wheel is carried by a steering column which is arranged for rotary movement about its axis, the column is mounted on a pivot member fixed relatively to the vehicle and tilting of the column about the pivot reverses direction of steering. As shown the steering mechanism comprising a fixed part 11 of the steering column connected to a cylindrical inner casing 13, the part 11 housing a shaft 20 carrying a bevel gear 19. The gear 19 meshes with a bevel gear 17 on a shaft 16 mounted in the casing 13 and carrying a bevel gear 18. Either of the bevel gears 17, 18 can mesh with a gear 22 on a shaft 21 carrying the steering hand wheel 10. The shaft 21 is carried in an upper tiltable part 12 of the steering column, the part 12 being connected to a cylindrical outer casing 14 pivoted to the casing 13. Locking means may be provided to lock the casing 13 in either of its tilted positions or in a vertical position. The invention may be applied to wheeled or tracked vehicles or to boats.
