Abstract

1295433 Vehicle power steering ALFORD & ALDER (ENGINEERS) Ltd 22 Dec 1969 [20 Sept 1968] 44873/68 Heading B7H A vehicle steering mechanism includes a rack-and-pinion steering gear and a doubleacting power actuator for assisting movement of the rack, the power actuator comprising a piston rod 51 arranged in parallel spaced relation with the rack 21 and rigidly coupled to the rack e.g. by a member 53, for movement therewith. The pinion 22 is rotatable via a valve arrangement including a torsion bar 26 and rotary valve 25 which may be as in Specification 1,978,628. To each end of the piston rod 51 a linkage 20 is connected via a ball joint 36 in which the ball 38 is urged against its housing 39 by a spring-biased disc 40. Ends of the actuator cylinder 52 and constituted by bearings 60 which are lubricated by pressure fluid supplied to the cylinder chambers. Protective bellows 54 enclose the ends of the piston rod and rack.
