Abstract

1,242,813. Toothed gearing. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. 10 March, 1970 [12 March, 1969], No. 11452/70. Heading F2Q. In a rack-and-pinion steering mechanism, the rack 3 is mounted in a housing 1 by bearing bushes 8 located at the ends of the housing, each bush 8 being carried in a pre-stressed rubber sleeve 7 having longitudinal grooves 10 and extending axially inwardly beyond the respective rubber sleeve by approximately one-third of the length of the bush, and the rack 3 is supported opposite the pinion 4 by a resiliently mounted thrust member 24 having a plastics coating 25. The thrust member 24 is mounted to slide in a bore 29 in housing 1 and is held under contact pressure by a spring 30. In a modification, two tubes 34, Fig. 4, are secured to the middle part of a steering gear housing, rubber sleeves 7<SP>1</SP> being vulcanized in the outer ends of the tubes and carrying bearing bushes 8<SP>1</SP>.
