Abstract

1275617 Power assisted steering mechanism ADWEST ENG Ltd 29 Oct 1970 [19 Aug 1969] 41433/69 Heading B7H A power assisted motor vehicle steering mechanism comprises a piston rod 3 axially movable through and sealingly engaging a partition wall 12 of a cylinder 10, with pistons 13, 14 arranged on either side of the wall, whereby fluid under pressure can be supplied between the partition wall and either one of the pistons to assist in moving the piston rod. The piston rod 3 has rack teeth engaging a pinion 4 which is connected to the vehicle steering wheel. A valve 19 which may be of the rotary type directs fluid under pressure to either side of the partition wall 12 via ports 9b. The piston rod is connected to the steerable road wheels by ball joints 5, 6 which are enclosed within bellows 17 the interiors of which are connected by a pipe 18.
