Abstract

836,531. Grinding. MSO MASCHINENUND SCHLEIFMITTELWERKE A.G. Sept. 30,1958 [Oct. 29, 1957], No. 31207 /58. Class 60. A work steady for a grinding machine has the steady jaws adjustable in accordance with the movement of the tool towards the axis of rotation of the workpiece, a feeler member for contacting the workpiece being adapted to actuate an electromagnetic control system which itself is adapted to actuate hydraulic control mechanism for feeding the steady jaws towards the workpiece. The workpiece 44 being ground by grinding wheel 1 is steadied by jaws 12, 17. The jaw 12 is carried by the rod 9 of a piston 7, and the jaw 17 is slidable in the steady housing 2, being engaged by a bell crank 16 co-operating with an adjustable screw 14 in a head 13 carried by the rod 9. A nut 11 adjustable on rod 8 of the piston 7 co-operates with a stop sleeve 32 which is axially adjustable through screw-and-nut gearing and rack-and-pinion gearing by a piston 30. When reversing valve 45 is actuated to cause the slide 6 to carry the wheel 1 to the workpiece, pressure liquid moves the piston 7 to bring the steady jaws into contact with the workpiece. One side of the piston 30 is subjected to pressure through line 47 via the cylinder for the piston 7 and normally the other side of the piston is subjected to the same pressure through valve 34. On reduction of the workpiece size, a feeler 19 operates, through rod 24, a switch 26 controlling soleniods 35, 36 of the valve 34, the latter being actuated so that the other side of the piston 30 is put to exhaust through throttle valve 38, the resultant movement of the piston 30 effecting a movement of the stop sleeve 32, so that the jaws are moved.
