A feed mechanism for grinding machines in which the workpiece is inserted either between a grinding wheel and control wheel in centreless fashion or between two coaxial grinding wheels comprises a pivotally-adjustable cam bar 16 adapted to transmit movement from a feed slide 14 to a slide 6 at right angles to it carrying either a grinding wheel or control wheel. As applied to the centreless grinding machine described in Specification 570,793, in which the slide 14 is hydraulically or pneumatically moved at right angles to the slide 6 carrying the control wheel 3 and workpiece support 4, on abutment 12, carried by a sleeve 11 on, and in end bearing contact with, a collar on a screwed shaft 10 for providing initial feed to the slide 6, engages the operative edge 22 of the bar 16, the inclination of which is adjustable by means of a slidable member 18, moveable against a graduated feed scale 21, or alternatively by a graduated angularly-moveable snail cam. A spring 13 maintains contact between the sleeve 11 and the thrust collar on the shaft 10. The operative edge of the bar 16 may be shaped as at 26, Fig. 2, to provide, initially, a more rapid feed than is effected by the edge 22. The control means for operating the feed slide 14 may be arranged to provide a dwell before the return of the slide so as to give time for " sparking out ". If desired, the cam bar 16 may be carried by the sleeve 11 and the abutment 12 by the slide 14, and the slide 6 may carry the grinding wheel instead of the control wheel. In another arrangement in which a workpiece is inserted between the flat faces of two coaxial grinding wheels, one of the grinding wheels is carried by a slide which is provided with feed movement by a feed slide through an adjustable cam bar as described above.
