Abstract
971,260. Sharpening cutters in cigarette machines. K. KÍRBER. Dec. 20, 1960 [Feb. 26, 1960], No. 43729/60. Heading B3D. [Also in Division A2] A cigarette rod cut-off fly knife 34, Fig. 1, which due to the angling of its drive shaft 2 moves with the rod 49 during cutting and whose holder 33 is so set that the knife passes through the rod at right angles, is pivoted in the holder support 4 by a stationary cam 22, Fig. 2, to allow coaction with grinding wheel 9 stationary in space and a like honing wheel 11. The cam 22 operates via followers 47 mounted on a ring 30 having an adjustable clamp connection 29 to a pivot 27 mounting the knife holder 33 in its support 4. There is a ball bearing 50. A second pivot 26 is acted on by an adjustable thrust ball 32. The cam 22 is on a hollow shaft 13 axially adjustably mounted via a key 14 and clamp nuts 18, 19 in an arm 6 on the pivotable drive shaft casing 1. Automatic advancement of the knife 34 to compensate for wear is effected by rollers 37 actuated via ratchet mechanism (not shown) operated by a ring 42, Fig. 1, connected to a manually reciprocable control shaft 39. In a modification, the cam 22 is replaced by a suitably offset yoke pivoted to the ring 30 at right angles to the pivots 26, 27 to form with them an Oldham coupling.
