Abstract

871,184. Gear-finishing. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. Aug. 17, 1959 [Oct. 6. 1958], No. 28024/58. Class 83 (3). A gear-honing or shaving machine in which the work 47 and tool 37 are movable towards each other comprises spring means 110 to urge them together during an operation. The tool 37 is carried on a support 35 pivoted at 34 to a head 30 adjustable angularly on a column 18 adjusted by a screw 26 on a slide 16. The work 47 is carried between stocks on a support 48 mounted on a central pivot and supported by bearings at its ends. The slide 16 is traversed by a motor 12, and carries a slotted plate engaged by a pin on the work support 48, the plate being adjusted angularly if it is desired to crown the work. The spring 110 acts on the support 35 to urge it towards the work through a rod 106, a lever 96 and a link 102, the support being guided by balls 130, Fig. 6, thereon engaging a projection 124 mounted on the tool head 30. Movement of the tool away from the gear is opposed by a tapered plunger 142 engaging an inclined surface 140 on the rod 106. The tool support is withdrawn by a plunger 116 operated by a compressed-air piston 118. When the plunger 116 is operated, the plunger 142 is released.
