A profile milling or engraving machine comprises workheads 2a-4a indexed by an electric torque-motor 10, a rotatable index plate 17 carrying stops 18 co-operating with a stationary abutment 19 to stop the workheads after indexing, and means 23 to release plate 17 for an indexing step terminated by the engagement of another of its stops with abutment 19. Letters, numbers, &c., may be engraved on the workpieces (not shown) by milling cutters on a vertically and laterally movable support (not shown). The workpieces are clamped on the workheads, which are carried by a support 1 secured in angularly adjusted position about the axis of a shaft 14 by a lock-nut 31. The support 1 may be mounted on a laterally-movable table (not shown) so that movements in three mutually perpendicular directions are provided for the engraving operation. Between operations, the workheads are indexed by the constantly ener gized motor 10, which drives index shaft 14 through a belt 13, the shaft being fixed to indexdisc 17 and indexing the workheads through helical gears 15, 16. The stops 18, in the form of pins slidable in holes or bushings in disc 18, have the projecting end of the operative stop pushed into the disc by a slide or (as shown) a lever 22 to free the disc for an index step. The lever is moved against a return spring (not shown) by a plunger 23 engaging a lever'21 on a shaft 20 carrying lever 22. Movement of the plunger is by a slide 6 supporting an adjustable, inclined track 7 which effects the vertical movements of the tool-head. Movement of slide 6 in direction " A " raises the tools from the work and releases the operative stop-pin 18. A stationary face-cam 26a returns the pins to operative position as they are carried around by the disc.
