[Class 83 (iii)] A lathe is provided with a lower cross slide 1 carrying an adjustable copy-bar 20 and an upper longitudinal slide 3, the latter being provided with at least one adjustably-fixed tool 21 and also with a tool 22 controlled by the copy-bar. The lower cross slide has an adjustment 2 on the lathe bed and the longitudinal slide is actuated by a pin 4 engaging a rib 5. The post 10 of the tool 21 is pivotally mounted on a bolt 12 engaging a slot 13 while the copying tool 22 is carried in an auxiliary cross-slide 15 moving in a post 11 secured in the desired angular position by a bolt 17. The slide 15 carries a pin 19 urged by a spring 33 against one face of the copy bar 20. Thus during the operative movement of the longitudinal slide, the tool 21 turns a cylindrical portion 23 of the work while, the tool 22 under control of the copy bar turns a taper portion 24. In a modification, Fig. 3, the two tools operate successively on successive strokes of the longitudinal carriage. In this case the pin on the auxiliary slide 15 operates in a recess 26 carrying a pivoted member 27 normally urged by a spring 29 so that its face 31 is parallel to the lathe axis. When the roller 19 is at a, Fig. 3, in its recess, the tool 21 is nearer the axis than the tool 22, and in this position the cross-slide 1 is advanced by its cam to move tool 21 to an operative position so that during movement to the left, Fig. 3, the tool 21 turns a cylindrical part 23 on the work, while the roller 19 travels from a to. b past the end of the pivoted part 31. The cross-slide is then retracted and the longitudinal slide returned to point d, the movement being shorter than the previous working movement. The cam rise from b to c brings tool 22 in front of tool 21. The cross-slide is again advanced and on the next movement to the left the tool 22 operates on the work. After retracting the main slide the longitudinal slide is moved back to its original position, whereupon the roller 19 reaches f and drops back to a, thus restoring the slides to their original positions.
