Abstract
764,493. Lathe details. DRUMMOND BROS., Ltd. April 27, 1955 [April 27, 1954], No. 12162/54. Class 83 (3). A lathe work - steady comprises rollers 24 ... 26 engaging the work 1, means for individually adjusting each roller relatively to the body 5 of the steady, and means for withdrawing the rollers from their operative positions without altering their individual settings when they are returned to said positions. The body 5 is clamped to lathe-bed 2 by strips 6, 7. Roller 24 is supported by carrier 23 adjustably secured to slide 18 on a carriage 9 which is slidable on guides 8 extending radially from the latheaxis. Slide 18 is adjustable by a screw 21, and carriage 9 has an adjustable stop 12 so that roller 24 is movable tangentially of the work. Roller 25 is supported on a slide 27 movable radially of the lathe-axis and adjustable by a screwed-rod 32 and knob 35. The rod is urged to withdraw the roller by a spring 37 and the roller is moved towards the work by a block 39 co-operating with a face 40 on a member 28 secured to the rod. Block 39 carries a rack 38 meshing with a pinion 42. Roller 26 is supported by a carrier 58 adjustably secured to a slide 57 urged by spring 63 to withdraw the roller. The roller is moved towards the work by a block 50 having a cam-face 54 cooperating with a member 65 secured to slide 57. Block 50 is secured by a rod 49 to a rack 43 also meshing with pinion 42 and attached to the piston-rod of a pneumatic jack 44 controlled by a valve 46. When carriage 9 is unlocked by manipulating lever 10, and moved along guides 8 to withdraw roller 24, it depresses lever 14 which actuates valve 46 and causes movement of jack 44 to the left to withdraw block 50 whereby spring 63 retracts roller 26. Simultaneously, pinion 42 is rotated by rack 43 to move rack 38 downwards to allow spring 37 to withdraw roller 25. Movement of tool 3 in carriage 4 is unimpeded by the steady.
