Abstract
698,292. Planing. GACK, L. Aug. 2, 1951 [Aug. 2, 1950; April 30, 1951], No. 18278/51. Class 83 (iii). A planing &c. machine comprises a tool 30 rotatably mounted on a reciprocating slide 5 so that, during the first part of a return movement of the slide, the tool is rotated positively in a forward direction to extend the cut as an arc continuous with the straight cut. Two stops 10, 11, are provided for limiting the rotational movement of the holder 7, and means 13, 17 for rotating the holder 7 at the end of each stroke from one stop to the other. The tool 30 is secured by a wedge in the holder 7 which carries a pinion 8 at its opposite end meshing with a longitudinally movable rack 13. The rack 13 is connected to a parallel sliding bar 14 to which is pivoted one link 17 of a toggle, the other link 19 being pivoted to the machine frame. As the tool-slide is moved by a slotted-link gear 23 on a cutting-stroke, the inertia of the rack 13 swings the tool-holder 7 against the stop 10, after which the pinion 8 and rack 13 lock together and move in unison. At the end of the cutting-stroke, the toggle 17, 19 closes. As the slide commences its return stroke the toolholder is swung against the adjustable stop 11, causing the tool to cut an arcuate portion at the end of the work 24, the rack 13 being held fast by the toggle. A dog 22 then breaks the toggle and the slide moves back with the tool clear of the work. The work-table 3 is verticallyadjustable and is fed between strokes of the tool. A spring device may replace the toggle. In a modification, the tool-holder 138, Figs. 9 and 12, swings against adjustable stops 139, 140. At the beginning of the return stroke the rack 113 is held fast by a stop 142 and a bell-crank 144. Upon further movement of the slide 105, a lever 159 on the tool-holder releases the bellcrank 144. The apparatus is stated to be suitable for attachment to existing machines.
