Tables and fences.-In a timber-trimming machine the lateral adjustment of the work 3 relatively to the trimming saw 2 is controlled by the action of selecting arms 8 which are pivoted under spring action so as to feel the edges of the work as it is moved past them, in which motion it is guided by a fence 5. Arms 10 rigidly attached to the selectors 8 operate racks 14, 18, 20 to adjust the sliding carriage of a roller 21 which co-operates with a conically faced cam 22. Ratchet and pawl gear (not shown) is arranged to prevent the return of the racks, so that the depth of the deepest recess encountered by the selectors determines the displacement of the roller 21 along the face of the cam 22, which in its rotation operates levers 24 and moves shafts 28 longitudinally, rollers 4 being mounted on the shafts which press on the work and adjust it laterally. Between the displacement of the roller 21 and its operation by the cam 22, the selectors 8 are withdrawn by the action of eccentrics 38, 39 and the fence 5 is moved out of the way by the action of eccentrics 59. A cam 75 subsequently raises the rollers 4 by means of levers 33, and a spring 36 is provided to draw the levers 24 and shafts 28 back to their original positions. During the operation of the selectors the work is not fed directly by the usual feed chain 60, but by means of an arm 63 carried by a sliding rod 62 moved against a weight 71 by a bell-crank 66 held so as to be engaged by the feed chain by a latch 67, which at a suitable point is tripped by a stop 70 so that the work is released for its lateral adjustment by the action of the rollers 4. Immediately afterwards the work is picked up by the feed chain and carried on to the trimming tool. Two sets of selectors 8, 9, Fig. 2, are provided, the upper set being horizontally and vertically adjustable by means of worm gearing 46, 52 respectively, with hand wheels 49, 55, so that timber of various thicknesses can be accommodated, and variously inclined edges can be cut. The lateral motion may be communicated to the tool instead of to the work, by arranging the lever 24 to adjust the position of a sliding carriage upon which the trimming tool and its driving motor are mounted.
