810,997. Grinding. STUDER MASCHINENFABRIK A.G., F. May 29, 1957 [June 1, 1956], No. 17074/57. Class 60. Mechanism for providing an in-feed of a machine tool carriage without backlash and for obtaining accurate in-feed end positions of the carriage without backlash and at constant pressures, is characterised by a toggle lever mechanism which is adapted to provide the in-feed movement and which is operable by a control member, the carriage being applied without backlash to one moving part of the toggle lever mechanism by means of a force opposed to the in-feed movement and by a stop device which fixes the end position of the carriage in the extended position. A workpiece 4, e.g. the gauge cylinder of an internal limit gauge, which may or may not rotate, is ground by a grinding wheel 2 mounted on a carriage 3 movable on the machine frame 1 by a toggle 7a, 7b operated through a push-rod 11, by a cam 6 on a shaft 5 rotated manually or automatically alternatively the toggle may be operated hydraulically. A spring 17 urges the carriage 3 backwardly so that the rear end of a pin 13 mounted in the carriage abuts a rod 8 to which the toggle link 7a is pivotally connected. The toggle link 7b is pivotally connected to a rod 9 having a head 9a normally held against the machine frame 1 by a spring 10. When the toggle is straightened, the carriage 3 is moved until the front end of the pin 13 abuts a stop 16 on the machine frame 1; the head 9a of rod 9 is forced away from the machine frame 1 and the spring 10 urges the front end of the pin 13 against the stop 16. The rod 13 is screw-threaded in the carriage, and can be rotated by gearing 14, 15 to compensate for wear of the grinding wheel 2. The spring 17 takes up backlash in the screw thread and in the toggle.
