581,486. Grinding &c. machines. VIAL & CO., L. Feb. 22, 1944, No. 3310. Convention date, Jan. 21, 1943. [Class 60] Mechanism for both rapid and precise adjustment of a movable part of a machine, for example, the grinding-wheel carriage 1 of a grinding-machine, comprises a rack 2 on the carriage engaged by a pinion 3 on the axle of a worm-wheel 5, which is engaged by a worm 6 formed on a spindle 7 having slidable and rotatable connection with a toothed wheel 8 and acted on by a compression spring 10. The spring urges the spindle against an abutment 16 on the end of a rod 12 having thereon a fine thread 13 screwing in the frame 14 of the machine, and rotatable by a hand wheel 11, so that rotation of the rod 12 allows, or produces axial movement of the worm 6, which acts as a rack and gives the carriage 1 a fine adjustment. Rapid adjustment of the carriage is effected by rotation of the worm 6, through gearing 8, 21, 20, 19, by a spindle 18 rotatable by a hand wheel 17. In order to eliminate play in the mechanism, the carriage has thereon pistons 24, 25 acted upon by pressure liquid through pipes 26, 27, pressure being maintained on the piston 24 during operation of the machine; by allowing the liquid to act on piston 25, the pressure on piston 24 being removed, the piston 25 effects a rapid withdrawal of the carriage from the operative position. The hydraulic control includes a rotary valve which operates either piston 24 or 25 and simultaneously operates a piston 28 to hold the pinion 8 stationary. In a third position of the valve, pressure on all three pistons is relieved to enable adjustment by means of the hand wheel 17.
