Abstract

700,570. Copy-turning. BECKER, H. July 10, 1951 [May 10, 1951], No. 16290/51. Class 83 (3) A lathe for turning Pilger rolls &c. has a toolcarrier rotatable in a horizontal plane for turning the arcuate roll surface, the carrier being simultaneously displaceable towards and away from the work by two or more cam discs, one at least of which is rotated in dependence on the rotation of the work and at least one other is rotated in dependence on the tool-carrier rotation. The work 1, Fig.' 1, is driven by gearing from an electric motor 2, which also drives an interconnected shaft 7, Fig. 3, for driving, through bevel gears 9, 10, and 45, 46 respectively, cam discs 12 and 45. Cam-disc 12, which corresponds to the cross-section of the finished roll, engages a follower 16 connected to a slide 15 which has a vertical groove to engage a roller 17 carried by a slidable rack 18. The rack moves in guides on a rotatable member which also carries a pinion 20 with which the rack engages. This pinion engages circular rack teeth on the end of a shaft 21 on the axis of the rotatable member and the motion is transmitted by further rack and pinion gearing to a rack 25, Fig. 2, on the cross-slide 26 carrying the tool. Angular rotation of the latter is effected by a worm wheel 29 forming part of the tool-rest and a worm secured to a shaft 31 which may be operated by hand with a crank or handwheel. Motion from the shaft is transmitted through toothed wheels 32, 33, the latter carrying a connecting rod 35, Fig. 1, which reciprocates a rack 34 and thus rocks a cam disc 41 on the end of a shaft forming the centre shaft of differential gearing 40, Fig. 3. The cam 41 rocks the rotatable member carrying the rack 18 through the arm 43, Fig. 1, and a follower roller thereon. The cam-disc 48, rotated from the work-spindle drive as described above, engages a follower on a lever 50 secured to the housing of the differential gear. In lieu of the crank and connecting rod drive for the cam-disc 41 an automatic toothed reversing-drive may be employed, Fig. 8, not shown.
