A clamping device has a clamping member 14 in the form of a a plunger or ram, the clamping member being mounted for sliding movement in a bearing block 13 form. ing part of the device, a toggle operating mechanism 17 for the clamp - ing member comprising a connecting link 26 and an operating member 18 pivotally connected together, wherein the operating member is pivotally connected to an adjustable block 23 which is arranged with its longitudinal axis in line with the longitudinal axis of the clamping member so as to allow angular movement of the toggle operating mechanism about the longitudinal axis of the clamping member which is rotatable in its bearing block to permit such adjustment. The bearing block and the adjustable block are carried by a common U-shaped bracket 10 and the operating member is a bell-crank lever, the long arm of which is provided with a handle 20. Movement of the member 18 is limited by a transverse pin 28 which engages the connecting link. The clamping member is internally threaded to provide for positive attachment of auxiliary tools or other members.
