A machine-tool comprises a rotating member 3, e.g. the operating-ring for the die-head of a screwing-machine, a non-rotating yoke or fork 4 for moving the ring 3 through the engagement in an annular groove 6 in the ring of one or more slippers 5 on the yoke, and brake means 9-12 for moving at least one of the slippers into engagement with the ring to bring it to rest, e.g. at the end of a screwing operation. The yoke is mounted for limited sliding movement on a pivot, at one end, and if only one of the slippers is movable in the yoke, cam means or a screw 11 and plunger 9 act against a spring 10, to clamp the movable slipper and displace the yoke until the other slipper also enters into clamping engagement with the opposite side of the ring. Alternatively, a common operating- handle may be arranged to move both slippers simultaneously in the yoke, or the slippers may be fixed rigidly to a divided yoke, the halves of which pivot to apply the brake. The slippers may be faced with friction-material to engage the base of the groove, or the sides of a groove of tapered section.
