Abstract

[Also in Division F2] An air-operated chuck comprises an annular piston 38 movable to push balls 58 radially inwardly and against a back face 63 of pockets 59 to move a spring biased sleeve and nosepiece unit 24, 29 to force a collet 16 into a conical recess 15 to grip a workpiece 21. The chuck is operated by a single pressure air line from a supply valve 109 through a swivel joint 102 having a single passage only, the valve 109 being able to supply pressure or to vent alternately. In order to direct the air alternately from one side of the piston to the other, the air is fed through passages 103, 105, 106, to the inside of the piston and then to a distributing valve (65), (Fig. 8, not shown), assembled in the piston 38. The distributing valve (65) comprises an axially movable spool which is rotated in 45 degrees steps at each axial movement to alternately connect the pressure supply to the two sides of the piston. When the chuck is operated to grip a workpiece, cam surfaces 55 on the sleeve 29 lock the collet in its gripping position and air trapped in the valve (65) is vented by operating valve 109. Subsequent operation of the valve 109 to supply pressure will release the workpiece. The gripping range of the collet can be adjusted by rotating the sleeve 29 so that screw threads 28 move the collet axially. The collet comprises jaws 18 bonded in a resilient, e.g. rubber, material 19.
