Abstract

1422985 Chucks C LE TESTU 23 May 1973 [29 May 1972] 24764/73 Heading B3B A hydropneumatic chuck comprises a primary piston 7 which is pneumatically actuated in both directions and which acts through hydraulic fluid in chambers 31, 32 on a secondary piston 14 which actuates a collet 4, the ratio of the crosssectional areas of the pneumatic and hydraulic pressure faces on the primary piston 7 forming a force-multiplying device, and is characterized by a body 1 and a sleeve 29 forming between them an annular chamber which is divided by a fixed intermediate piece 11 into two communicating parts which receive respectively the primary and secondary pistons 7, 14 with hydraulic fluid trapped therebetween so as to provide a primary air chamber 19 on the chuck closing side of the primary piston 7 and two secondary air chambers 20, 21 on the chuck opening side of the pistons 7 and 14 respectively. The chuck, e.g. mounted by three equi-spaced clamps 2 on a lathe face plate, is fed with pneumatic pressure fluid from connections 17 and 22 or 34 and 35. The body 1 may support a stop 5 within the collet to provide a work engaging face 5a. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 3-5, not shown) the body 1 has a square cross-section and clamp engaging dove-tail grooves 39 are provided on two pairs of faces to enable it to be clamped on a face plate upright or on its side. In one corner of the body is provided an oil compensating chamber and screw adjuster which enable the position of the secondary piston 14 to be adjusted to suit small variations in size of the collets 4. An external fluid pressure control circuit is described (Fig. 6, not shown) with fluid pressure ducts passing through a hollow spindle.
