Abstract

1,152,864. Chucks. P. BRUNDLER. 1 June, 1966 [1 June, 1965; 26 Jan., 1966], No. 24464/66 Headings B3B and B3C. A quick-acting chuck comprises a body 1, Figs. 1, 2, having a conical bore 2 for a boring tool 4, a clamping device 6 for the tool, and a device 22 operated by a ring 27 to displace the device 6 axially. Device 6 comprises an insert 7, a spring 8, a screw 9, a thrust nut 10, and a stop 11. Insert 7 has projections 12, 13, which form a bayonet joint with tool 4, and screw 9 has a face cam 21 which co-operates with a face cam 24 on a bolt 23 of device 22. Ring 27 can be locked in its operating position by means of a locking device 28, and stops 33-36 are provided to prevent projections 12, 13 from slipping out of the bayonet joint. In operation, ring 27 is rotated, cam 24 moves ring 10 axially to compress spring 8, tool 4 is connected to projections 12, 13, and rotated until it is blocked by stop 35, or if the latter is not fitted, stop 33, cam 24, is further rotated, and tool 4 is drawn in to the chuck by spring 8. In a modification, tool 102, Fig. 3, is held in the chuck by two conical portions 109, 110, and is clamped by a device 103. The latter comprises projections 119, 120 which form a bayonet joint with tool 102, is actuated to clamp the tool. by springs 127, and is moved axially to release the tool, by sliding a sleeve 135 so as to pivot a lever 104.
